Celebrating Our 3rd Anniversary!

Razorback Tailgate Party

On August 31st, we celebrated the third anniversary of Village Golf and Physical Therapy Center by throwing a tailgate party for the Razorback game. What a way to kick off the Hog football season and enjoy the company of the many patients we have served over these three years. Just last week, we treated our 600th villager. I want to personally thank you for sharing your therapy experience with others and helping us grow. VGPT was a dream of mine ever since I moved to the Hot Springs area. My wife and I lived in Hot Springs Village for about a year and a half, and, because I love golf, I always

envisioned opening a clinic to serve the golfing community in the Village. Even though I had searched many locations over the years, the opportunity finally presented itself when a friend of mine from church contacted me and asked if I needed some equipment from a recently closed PT facility. I told him that I didn’t need the equipment, but I would check out the space for lease. One thing led to another, and we opened Village Golf and Physical Therapy Center the Tuesday after Labor Day, 2014. Our time investing in the Village community has been incredible, and I’m looking forward to many more years of building relationships and assisting others on the road toward healing.

Staff Spotlight Kaylinn Hutter

Kaylinn Hutter joined the Spa City Therapy team as a physical therapist assistant at the end of May, 2017, after graduating from Arkansas Tech University. Kaylinn chose to pursue a career as a PTA because of her passion to serve others. She loves being a part of the process of helping people move toward healing, and seeing her patients regain abilities that they had lost. “When I see someone that is not able to do something that they could before because of an injury, my passion is to help them get to where they were before the injury.” Kaylinn loves the team at Spa City, as well as the patients that she serves. “We have a great team.

Everybody gets along so well…and it’s a really great environment to work in,” she said. Kaylinn loves horses, and used to barrel race with her horse Misty. One of Kaylinn’s most memorable moments growing up was when she was around twelve years old. Kaylinn, after learning how to ride on her neighbor’s horse, bought Misty as the very first horse of her own. When Kaylinn was told that Misty knew how to run barrels, she gave it a try and fell in love with the sport. In addition to barrel racing, Kaylinn enjoys riding horses, hiking, kayaking, spending days on the lake, and just being in the great outdoors.

Patient Testimonials

“I was extremely blessed to meet all of you!” “I was extremely blessed to meet all of you! You guys are absolutely incredible! From the first day I walked in I knew I had found the right place and that I was surrounded by very professional and caring people. I had endured dreadful pain in my neck for many months. The discomfort radiated down my arms causing many sleepless nights. I was terrified of addressing the pain for fear of surgery and all the things that come along with it. After finally seeing my doctor I elected to try physical therapy instead of medications. I was overwhelmed with the improvements I experienced after my very first visit. I have now been able to sleep, walk up stairs without my arms and legs falling asleep, and work at my desk job without the aches and pains I had experienced. I am confident that with the stretches you taught me, I will be able to control any issues that may reappear. Thank you Spa City Therapy for taking care of me and relieving me of the unnecessary pain that I was so afraid to address!!” -Pamela

“They were very kind and encouraging helping me reach my goals.” “After a total knee replacement, I came to Spa City Therapy. My experience was fantastic. I received excellent care from Lee and his staff. They were very kind and encouraging helping me reach my goals. The staff at Spa City are a family and make you feel very special along with making sure you do what is needed to progress. When I came in the door on the first day I was on a walker. When I left on my last day, I was able to walk out unassisted, practically pain free. I can’t thank Lee and his entire team enough for working with me to make sure my knee was as good as possible.” -Debra

This doesn’t have to involve a complete house remodel. You can make your home safe from falls with just a few basic changes. Senior care experts offer the following advice for preventing falls at home: 9 Ways to Prevent Falls at Home

4. Avoid wearing loose clothing. You want to feel comfortable at home, but baggy clothes can sometimes make you more likely to fall. Opt for better-fitting and properly hemmed clothing that doesn’t bunch up or drag on the ground. 5. Light it right. Inadequate lighting is another major hazard. To create a home that’s more suitable for the elderly, install brighter light bulbs where needed, particularly in stairways and narrow hallways. Add night- lights in bedrooms and bathrooms for better guidance at night. 6. Wear shoes. Socks may be comfortable, but they present a slipping risk. Preventing falls at home can be as simple as wearing shoes. You can also purchase non-slip socks that have grips on the soles of the feet if shoes are too uncomfortable. 7. Make it nonslip. Bathtubs and showers, as well as floors in kitchens, bathrooms, and porches, can become extremely dangerous

1. Clean up clutter. The easiest method for preventing falls is to keep your home neat and tidy. Remove all clutter, such as stacks of old newspapers and magazines, especially from hallways and staircases. 2. Repair or remove tripping hazards. Sometimes home fixtures can contribute to falls, which can then lead to back pain and other injuries. Examine every room and hallway, looking for items such as loose carpet, slippery throw rugs, or wood floorboards that stick up. Then repair, remove, or replace those items for more effective fall prevention. 3. Install grab bars and handrails. These safety devices are crucial for going up and down stairs, getting on and off the toliet, and stepping in and out of the bathtub without injuring yourself. Install grab bars by toilets and bathtubs and handrails in stairways and hallways. Have a handyman or family member help with this if necessary.

when wet. To prevent falls on slick surfaces, use nonslip mats. 8. Live on one level. Even with precautions like guardrails, stairs can present a significant falling hazard. “If possible, live on one level,” says Kaplan. “Otherwise be extra- careful when you negotiate stairs.” If it’s not possible to live on one level, try to limit the trips you take up and down the stairs. 9. Move more carefully. Many people fall at home by moving too quickly from a sitting to a standing position and vice versa. Pause after going from lying down to sitting and from sitting to standing. Also take a pause before using the railing on stairs, whether going up or down.

Have You Ever Suffered a Concussion?

What is the most common misconception about concussions? A big misconception is that a concussion only occurs as a result of a direct blow to the head. Something like a car crash or a football tackle. With that perception, if an athlete gets a few seemingly minor hits in a soccer game or a basketball game, they don’t think they have a chance at suffering a concussion so they don’t report it. Instead, they keep playing which can be very dangerous. A concussion may be caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body if the force of the impact is transmitted to the head. It’s important for athletes, parents and coaches to understand that multiple small impacts can cause one to occur. These smaller impacts can still cause symptoms like headaches, trouble concentrating, and behavioral changes. When athletes and parents understand that a concussion can begin frommultiple smaller impacts, they start taking note of those during games and practices which helps with early recognition.

Why is it so important to have a program specific to concussion management? Education of understanding concussions is important. We educate patients and give them the tools they need to recognize when a concussion occurs so they are not putting themselves in potential danger for further injury by continuing to play. A concussion is a bruise on your brain. It affects a person’s performance in any environment. Our program addresses both these areas and monitors the patient’s symptoms so that they are not returning to either before their brain can handle it. How can a physical therapist help? Physical therapists can evaluate and treat many problems related to concussion. Because no 2 concussions are the same, a physical therapist will examine your neurological, orthopedic, and cardiovascular systems in order to best prescribe a routine to address your particular symptoms and your needs in all of your daily environments.
