MIYC Goes Country!

Marco Island Yacht Club

2

Last month's Country Western Night, featuring the fab Ben Allen band, was a Smash Hit. Music in the Harbour Room rocked, with a big sound and a mighty beat. And our Members were truly up to the occasion, arriving in cowboy hats, boots, jeans and everything but spurs! And audience participation too! Alice Jobe and the MIYC line dancers fancy stepped to "Achy Breaky Heart," and we learned new routines from Ben Allen's pro line dancers. A super "down-home" buffet by Chef Bob once again topped off the evening.

Commodore

Wow, what a great March at MIYC! Despite the rain, wind and smoke, the fun-filled events continued! It’s always a great month with visiting children and grandchildren who participate in the Club’s activities. Special thanks to Jim & Linda Marr who purchased and installed the roping along the board walk with the help of their grandsons, Aidan & Logan. The NCAA event got almost everybody to the free-throw line down by the fountain. Was that tape the regulation 15 feet to the back board? Our Colors Ceremony got “smoked” out, but will resume on April 20. Please visit the MIYC calendar for all of April’s functions and save the dates for Boater’s Night, the Day and Sunset cruises, Scavenger Hunt, and the next Extended Cruise.

Chairman’s Report

It’s hard to believe Easter has come already! I checked the reservation list for the Grand Easter Buffet – 300 individuals were signed up to enjoy Chef Bob’s seasonal treat…and there was a waiting list! I certainly hope you were able to attend this this outstanding event! April is a ‘3-fer’ for the Club this year. First, based on reservations already on the books, it should match March in terms of Club usage and activities. Second, April is when people start thinking about heading North and leaving those of us who live here year- round. And this year we have a third -- the roof- replacement company will be working on sections of our roof. Beginning the second week of April and continuing for much of the remainder of the month, the roofing crew will be installing the new metal roofing and repairing some of the flat roof sections. Building & Grounds Chairman Chip Pittman is working hard to coordinate their work and timing with our scheduled club events to minimize disruption. I appreciate your patience and understanding during this process. It is important that we get the roof replacement done before the rainy season. As mentioned, Chip is working closely with the roofing company to assure we have minimal disruption. And Operations and HR Chair Bob DeFeo continues to monitor the reservations calendar to determine when we have potential problem points. Together with the staff, they will be coordinating and communicating with the roofing company and our membership and guests. The new metal roof panels will be delivered to our site, ready to be installed. The roofing company has a

manufacturing site nearby that will prepare the panels, and they will be delivered for installation daily. During this time, we will have appropriate safety barriers in place, but I encourage you to keep yourself alert when entering or exiting the building during the roof installation time period.

Dave Everitt Chairman

In addition, there will be a second time period, during the latter part of May that will also have a significant impact on Club operations. For the roof portion that holds the air conditioning and refrigeration units, we will have cranes on site removing and re- installing the equipment after those roof sections are finished. This will require close coordination with our vendor responsible for maintaining the units, the roofing company, and our Club staff. In both April and May, we want to complete the reconstruction in a safe and minimally impactful way. However, there will be construction workers, materials, and pieces of equipment around the Club so please pay extra attention to your own safety during this period. As construction plans are finalized, please look out for additional messages and communications concerning our roof project. When complete, we will have a new roof protecting our Clubhouse for many years to come! Dave Everitt Chairman

Mariner Society

MIYC Board of Directors announces the Mariner Society. The Mariner Society was established for the enhancement of our Club experience through refurbishment and development of our Club’s facilities. A Board Committee has been established called the Mariner Development Fund to identify the specific projects or areas needing contributions from members. These projects will be on display for your perusal. Donations should be directed to support capital projects, ongoing maintenance, and/or general sustainability of the Marco Island Yacht Club. Donations can be made by check, credit card, or billing on your Club account. Forms are available to fill out to identify where you wish your contribution to be used. A recognition plaque identifying the program, levels of recognition and individual members’ names reflecting their accumulation of contributions will be on display in a public area of the clubhouse. The Mariner Society recognizes five levels of contribution to the Club: Mariner Society Recognition Levels Platinum $20,000 Diamond $50,000 Sapphire $100,000 Contributions by an individual member will be accumulated, and as their contributions increase, they will move to higher levels of recognition. If you would like to make a contribution or have any questions, please contact Jim McKeown, Chairman, at [email protected] Bronze $500 Silver $2500 Gold $10,000

Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef

March was a wonderfully busy month in many ways. In addition to our Member Events which included Boater’s Night, The Ben Allen Band Country Western Dinner Dance, St. Patrick’s Day Burgee Fun, the Grande Sunday Brunch, Viva Italia Wine & Dine Dinner and the Book Club Luncheon, we also entertained 12 outside catering events. Wow! Add in our busy a la carte Lunch and Dinner Schedule and I would have to say, “Our plate was full!” We also had an MIYC first (twice) where we orchestrated 3 dinner events simultaneously. And April is not slowing down! Please keep a diligent eye on our clubhouse communications for all of the exciting events yet to come. Our F&B costs of operations and overall member survey satisfaction continue to show favorable results. Your F&B team is always trying to be efficient and creative at the same time. This is the only way that we can sustain such a large operation. Please help us by making reservations early and adhering to the reservation time you have selected. As our MIYC 2018 “season” tap dances along towards our exciting summer, I can feel the new

events and activities at our Club heating up. That’s right! Stay tuned for E-Blasts on new fun filled summer offerings like Two Entrees and a Bottle of Wine, Saturday Night Burgee Bash and Small Plate Wednesdays. I speak for the entire F&B team when I say I will miss Jim and Mary Carleen Ferry. We wish

them fair winds and following seas. They are great members and I am glad that I met them. Our F&B team will never let the barnacles build up under this boat. We will travel slowly in the shallow waters but we will increase our knots when the seas allow. We will not anchor from the stern but we will stand topside under our brand new roof ready to serve.

Thank you - Chef Bob

A Hunting Club at MIYC? Let us know if you are interested! Do you like to hunt? The success of the new Fishing Club has ignited some interest in starting a Hunting Club, too. Southwest Florida is teeming with waterfowl, upland birds, big game like wild boars and other potential game--not to mention, the possibility of organizing longer trips to more distant locations in the US and Canada. We could also organize Club skeet shoots at Gulf Coast Clays at Port of the Islands in Naples. If you are interested in joining with other Members to plan and go on hunts or go skeet shooting, please reply to this email to let us know. New Member Marshall Hughes has agreed to coordinate the Hunting Club. All those who reply will go on an email list, and Marshall will reach out to you to schedule a planning meeting and organize the group. The Hunting Club will become whatever you want to make it, bringing together Members who share this common interest. If you have questions, you can reach out to Marshall at [email protected]

MIYC Membership

The Membership Committee has been hard at work getting prepared for Summer as well as FY2019. We will unveil our Dues Structure for FY2019 at the Member Meeting on April 17. There are other events we want you to learn about though! First, help us to welcome Cynthia and Tony Didado, new Full Members from Ohio who live on their boat at the end of C Dock while visiting the island as they look for a more permanent residence on the island. They still work full time but we hope they will come visit OFTEN! We are also welcoming new Trial Members Joan and Joseph Lipic referred to the Club by Members Irene and Paul Soden and we are welcoming back Social Members Barbara and Doug Johnston . Next, our Club will be featured at TASTE OF MARCO benefiting the YMCA on Sunday, April 8th at the Esplanade. Chef, Pam and Cynthia along with Members from the Membership Committee will be staffing our tent! We will be raffling off Summer Memberships. (Yes, we are going to have Summer Memberships available starting May 1. We'll have more information about that in the Member Meeting on April 17th, too!) On Monday, April 9 th , our Social Members are welcome to participate in the Day Cruise to the Hyatt House in Naples! As part of our Strategic Plan, our new Boating Committee recommended that one time per season we invite our Social Members on a Day Cruise so that Social Members

can see what they are missing by not being Full Boating Members! Social Members, if you want to go on the Day Cruise, please RSVP to Chip Pittman at [email protected] soon! April is also our featured month for UPGRADE TO EQUITY for our Membership . Last year, 10 Members upgraded from Full Membership to Equity Membership in the month of April! If you’d like to won 0.5% of your Club, get a 15% discount on Food and Beverage as well as Ship’s Store Merchandise and, per Gillian Hamer, “have clout” consider upgrading to Equity Membership for $7,500 before the price of an equity share rises to $9,000 on May 1, 2018. Finally, our Club will host the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce After Five Event on Wed., April 18th. We look forward to introducing many of the island's business members to our re-vitalized Club! Thanks to all of our Members who have been so welcoming to all of our new Members to the Club! We are quickly approaching Member levels where we may start to cap the number of Members in specific categories so that our excellent service levels can be maintained. Sincerely, Kathy Caruso and Vicki Bretthauer Membership Co-Chairs

MIYC Fishing Club Report

Fishing in Southwest Florida is finally starting to improve. Members of the Fishing Club fished several times during the month and caught a variety of fish, including Pompano, Yellowtail, Spanish Mackerel, Sea Trout, Grouper, Snapper, Ladyfish and Shark. The warmer weather heated the backwater areas and the Gulf. As we approach April, we expect fishing to improve even further. High winds made fishing difficult at times with rough and murky water conditions. If the winds

calm down, we expect to see some strong Tarpon activity. The fishing club will have one organized day of Tarpon fishing. If you are not a member of the Fishing Club and would like to fish, please contact me v i a e m a i l a t [email protected] The next Fishing Club meeting will be on Thursday April 19 at 11:30 am.

JOBNAME:

Have you noticed the Burgees hanging in the Burgee Bar? A private burgee, or owner's signal, is a way of expressing your own vision of the pleasure of sailing, and pride in your boat. The tradition of a unique pennant flown from the masthead goes back hundreds of years. The word "burgee" usually refers to a yacht club flag, but modern yachtsmen often use the term for any private flag. You can choose to make your own flag or hire someone to do the sewing. Members who are visiting the Club for a couple of hours during the mid-day. It is essential, however, that if you are interested in coming to the Club by boat, that you remember to call ahead to Richard Varnes, Dockmaster, or on Saturdays and Sundays, Mike Mann, Asst. Dockmaster, to see if slips are available and to get a slip assignment. When you get to the Marina, call them on the radio, and they will be there to assist you in docking. While we are reminding you of things you already know, please remember to turn off your radar when entering the Marina, or any marina for that matter. The radar beam is safely over your head, but for the Dockmaster, especially on non-floating docks, he is close by and directly in the radar beam’s path. So, with the warm weather just around the corner, come to the Club by boat and enjoy a delicious lunch at the new Burgee Bar. Kathy Hershberger Port Captain

Although it is now officially Spring, the chilly weather of the last few weeks has given us reason to doubt it. However, the changes in the Marina happening now convince us that Spring, indeed, is here. Some of the more

restless seasonal visitors are starting to get their vessels seaworthy again and will be casting off their lines soon. It will be another month before the more laid-back, as well as those from the coldest parts of the country, leave their slips. Nevertheless, it all means that more slips will begin to be available for our transient friends to come and visit again. It won’t be a 1 for 1 trade-off however, because the demand for long-term leasing of slips is still pretty high. With more slips available, it also means that MIYC Boating Members can now come to the Club for lunch by boat. MIMA makes slips available to MIYC Boating

Check Out Our Enhanced Website! We’ve been making improvements to our website—check it out! It now has more information and it’s easier to use! Drop down menus are one new feature that makes it easier to find the information you’re looking for. In “Member Central” (the password-protected side of the website for Members only) you can more quickly access the roster, pay your statement, check the calendar of events, see our Fleet List, join a committee and more! Log in and take a spin!

Also, take a look at the new information we’ve put on the “public” side of the website. Under “About Us,” we have added a Club History, a map with directions, and photos of our Bridge Officers. Under the “Boating” tab, we have added information about our various types of cruises, the sailing program, information for visiting cruisers (under “Port Captain”) and safety and training information. And there will be even more to come! See next page.

We're Looking for Sponsors for New Members Are you in? Marco Island Yacht Club is growing! That's terrific, but it does bring new challenges, especially if we are to keep our reputation as the "fun and friendly" club on the Island! Prospective new Members often walk through the door without knowing a soul at the Club. That's why we would like to develop a list of Members who are willing to serve as Sponsors. What does a Sponsor do? • Meet the prospect and introduce them to others at Happy Hour • Sign the application as Sponsor • Continue to introduce them around the Club after membership is official • Invite them to join you for dinner or an event • Help them learn about all of the activities and events at the Club • Ensure that we get a photo and short bio for Communications • Generally "shepherd" them through their first month or two at the Club Being a Sponsor is a wonderful way to get to know some great new people and increase your own friendship circle. The Membership Committee Chairs will maintain the list of volunteer Sponsors and will call you when you are needed. We will try to match prospects and Sponsors by common interests, geography or some other dimension. Getting new Members off to a good start will enrich their experience and your own! Please email Cynthia Hultquist, our Membership Coordinator, at [email protected] or call 394-0199 x303 if you are willing to serve as a Sponsor. Thank you! Membership Co-Chairs Vicki Bretthauer and Kathy Caruso

Looking for a delightful way to meet a great group of women? Thursday mornings at MIYC bring much laughter as we play Pony Canasta. Starting at 9:30 & ending after a delicious Club lunch by 1:00. New players welcome! All you need is a willingness to laugh & learn. Don't know how to play, but want to learn? Know how to play and want to join the group? Everyone is welcome! Call Marsha Riss 389-7477 or email [email protected]

Marco Island Yacht Club Friday Golf Group Marco Island Yacht Club has a lot of members who enjoy getting out on the links. In recognition of this, we have a golf club within the yacht club! Every Friday morning a MIYC men’s golf group gets together at one of the local courses to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and golf. This golfing opportunity has been going strong for many years, probably as long as MIYC has been a private, non-profit yacht club. In the winter and spring when we play at Hibiscus, the weekly participants swell to around 50 players on any given Friday. In the summer, when many in the group head north, some weeks we only have between 12 and 20 for play at The Glades. This weekly activity is open to all Members. For those of you who have no knowledge about our Friday golf, let me tell you that it is right for everyone of us who can still swing a golf club and bend down to pick up a golf ball! It is purely for the fun of being out

together and enjoying each other’s company on a beautiful 18 holes. Additionally, every 4 -6 weeks, we have a $5.00 tournament that usually has three flights. Everyone has a good chance to win. So, please, if you are looking for some friendly golf on a Friday morning, consider joining our group. Call me at 239-970-0273 or Bob Winterhalter at 239-389-0825, for more information and to get signed up. Dick Irwin, Past Commodore

MIYC Fishing Club A new MIYC Fishing Club was launched last month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 19 th , at 11:30AM at the Burgee Bar. What is the MIYC Fishing Club? Many Club Members have an interest in fishing, yet they rarely fish in southwest Florida. Why not? Either they: ◦ Do not own a boat ◦ Are looking for a friend to fish with ◦ Or are unfamiliar with the area and not quite ready to go it alone in Marco Island The Fishing Club is a solution for Members to get out and fish on a regular basis. Who can participate? All members can attend the Thursday late afternoon meetings. At each meeting, we will discuss a variety of fishing topics from “what is biting” to how to catch them to tricks of trade. Going Fishing The goal is to set 1-2 fishing trips each month (one backwater, one offshore). Full, Equity and Associate Full Members may attend these trips (one of the many “on the water” benefits of Full membership). Members who are new to fishing need to: Purchase 2 rods and reels, tackle box, basic lures, hooks, leaders, etc. (available at Sunshine Ace on San Marco). If you do not know how to cast – start practicing. When we get out on the water, the fishing is often fast and furious and it’s not the right time to learn how to cast. For those who would like to fish backwater and offshore, please learn the following basic knots. They can be found on YouTube. · FG or uni-to-uni (connects braid to mono/fluorocarbon) · Rapala knot (connect mono/floro to a lure, hook, etc.) The 3 rd Thursday of each month will be our set time for Fishing Club meetings. For those who want to stay for dinner after the meeting, Thursday is Prime Rib night! Interested in joining the Fishing Club? Contact Jeff Comeaux at [email protected]

If you are like me, you remember learning to play bridge in college and then there was the “social” bridge at night or on a lucky day when you could get time off from your busy schedule. Then came an even busier time in my life with work, so many kid’s activities, and bridge went by the wayside. Well, it is time to get back in the swing of it. If you play bridge, have ever played bridge, or even want to learn how to play bridge, MIYC is the place to do it. We have a very lively group of “social” bridge players. New Members are most welcome! There is no pressure to remember everything about the game and there are willing teachers to help you remember and learn. We play every Wednesday at noon if there are at least four of us available to play. Chef Bob serves us an amazing “surprise” lunch before we begin play.
