The 3 rd Annual MIYC Nautical Scavenger Hunt was another big success. Jeff & Carol Comeaux took over for Dick & Sharon Irwin, who did a wonderful job for the last two years. Wow, great attendance at all April events!! Boater’s night set a record attendance as Peggy Frazier, our Dolphin Whisperer, introduced speaker, Bob McConville, Master Naturalist. This month’s Wine and Dine was sensational, if you like French food and wine!!! In the 11 years Diana and I have been regularly attending these events, we voted this the best. The perfect combination of an excellent sommelier, delicious food, with nice wine pairings, and prompt service made this a memorable evening. While I know some members bristle at the event pricing; for most of us, the wine is sufficient alcohol, and included in the price. May offers another packed calendar, even as our “Snow Bird” members gradually migrant North and overseas. Please check MIYC Website Calendar as several activities have been rescheduled due to Club being closed May 20-30 for that phase of the Irma Roof replacement that requires HVAC removal and resetting. On May 2, Freedom Boat Club will explain their program, locally operated out of Goodland, at Boater’s night. It’s an interesting concept for some of our members, who are considering selling their boats.

Bob Winterhalter Commodore

Then on Tuesday May 8 we travel to Naples Yacht Club for our annual Day cruise there, which will include a short program by their senior management, describing their major restoration program. Colors has been rescheduled to the 18 th and Sunset Cruise to the 31 st . One year ago, I directed my 1 st Color’s Ceremony, with a very emotional Memorial Day program. I have a similar program planned this month. Then on Saturday the 19 th , The start of National Safe Boating Week kicks off, as MIYC hosts the Island’s Commanders Forum, always “Wear IT” Campaign. There will be police and fire boats, and a fly over by Civil Air Patrol. Bring yourself, spouse, children, grandchildren and pets --all wearing life preservers or PFD’s to the 10AM Photo shoot at the Fountain. Our Colors Ceremony got “smoked” out but will resume on April 20. Please visit the MIYC calendar for all of May’s Functions and save the dates for Boater’s night, Day and Sunset cruises, Scavenger hunt and extended cruise. Chairman’s Report

With the month of May comes the end of Season. Many of our Members are in the process of heading back North…while those of us who stay here year-round are enjoying a few less cars on the road! However, activities at the Club have continued unabated. And participation, new Member applications, and loads of fun have kept us all busy! One of my objectives as Chairman has been to increase the level of communication with our Membership. We now hold two Equity Member meetings and two All-Member meetings each year…one in November and the other in April. We recently held our April All-Members meeting for 2018 on the 17th, with approximately 75 individuals attending. Afterwards, we adjourned to the Burgee Bar for drinks, conversation, dinner, some really good entertainment -- and dancing in the courtyard! A number of the Committee Chairs presented updates on activities and various initiatives that their respective committees have been working on. The meeting concluded with the Chairman’s comments and a Q&A session. For those of you not able to attend, the following will give you some highlights from the meeting. The Membership Committee reported on the number of current members (now 215!), the 2019 dues and fees levels approved by the Board, and various activities and projects under consideration by the Committee. The Committee also reported that the dues levels are the same as 2018 with two exceptions. A slightly greater amount of the base dues levels is being allocated to our capital account. And a mortgage service fee of $40 per month is being added to cover our refinanced mortgage. In addition, the Committee reported on three new membership categories approved by the Board: Summer Membership; Non-Resident Membership; and Navigator Membership (replacing the Associate Membership category). If you have any questions, please contact Vicki Bretthauer or Kathy Caruso, Membership Committee Co- Chairs. The Member Events Committee provided a summary of the Member events held during the past season. Importantly, all events are now generating a positive contribution to our operating margin. The Committee also reported that there are a number of activities and events planned for the summer, ensuring we have an even more active summer season at the Club, which should help offset our usual summer deficits. Be sure to watch for emails and check out the events calendar on our website for our enhanced summer line up! The Communications and Marketing Committee reported that the response to the Member Survey has been exceptional. We received nearly a 50 percent response rate – a strong indication of our Club Member engagement level. Look for a Survey Results Report soon -- and thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback! The Operations and HR Committee reported on staffing levels and the planned transition as we move into the summer season. In addition, the Committee reported on a number of administrative activities they have been working

on, including an updated employee manual and an i m p r o v e d e m p l o y e e performance review process. The Building and Grounds Commi t t e e r e p o r t e d o n p r o g r e s s f o r t h e r o o f replacement. The Committee also reported that a number of improvements have been made around the Clubhouse this season. In many cases, our in- house Maintenance Tech has

Dave Everitt Chairman

been able to repair equipment without bringing in outside contractors or replacing the equipment. Also, the cooperation between Building and Grounds and the Operations and HR Committee functions have saved the Club several thousand dollars in repairs this season! The Finance Committee reported that we have completed five successive profitable months this budget year, and are on-pace to meet our overall budget projections for the year. This is a quite positive result for the Club and is a result of improved operations management, improved cost control, and increased Membership. The Committee also reported the successful completion of our mortgage refinance project. Twenty-nine Members have invested in the new mortgage, giving the Club a much-improved financial position. In my Chairman’s comments at the meeting , I reviewed the recently announced Hurricane Irma assessment being billed with the statements issued in April. I also discussed the Mortgage Finance Fee that will be implemented in 2019, including the reasoning and benefits of doing so. By the way, Ray Rosenberg commented that this fee is fairly standard among Florida yacht clubs. I also updated the Membership on upcoming activities associated with developing additional boat slips on the Marco River side of the Club. This project will be done in conjunction with MIMA. Finally, I want to thank all the Committee Chairs and Committee Members. Your engagement has been the major contributor to our success this year and over the past two years. Our Club prospers when our Membership is engaged and working toward common objectives. I also want to thank all the Members for your continued support for our activities and for your usage of the Club. As I have said to many people, our "brand" is that of a welcoming and Member-inclusive Club. Your actions and your continued support make that a reality! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me, any of the Board, Bridge, or Committee Members listed elsewhere in the Anchor Lines. Have a great summer wherever you may be! Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef

Ahoy members of MIYC! I picture the summer like a mad scientist rubbing his inventive hands together and pondering his next great discovery. After attending our latest Member Events Committee meeting I can honestly say “This will be a fun summer!” Keep a keen eye out for eblasts filled with information about our new “Wednesday Night Small Plates” menu, our Thursday Night “Two Dinners and a Complimentary Bottle of Wine” special, Friday Night Happy Hours and Saturday Night Events with Live Entertainment and different themes. The month of May kicks off with some robust banquet business and this is welcome news. My industry colleagues throughout Southwest Florida all agree that this summer is starting out very well. The MIYC marketing team along with the solid efforts of Pam Dorr, Mr. Defeo and myself have truly streamlined our outside banquet focus so that we now may take advantage of the possibilities which exist. Hats off to all who are working so hard to market our wonderful Club to the masses. Speaking of “Hats,” don’t miss our “Hats and Horses” Kentucky Derby Party on May 5 th . This is

always a special event filled with fun, food and drink. Thank you everyone who participated in the annual “Members Survey.” There was a lot of great information in there and the Food and Beverage team looks forward to deciphering it all and reacting to the areas where we can improve.

Bob Aylwin Manager/Executive Chef

As most of you are aware, the Clubhouse will close on May 20 for the final phases of our roof replacement. We will keep everyone updated as to the progress and reopening date. We are anticipating 10 days, but that could change depending on the weather. A wise man once said: “Tiny drops of experiences collated from the roof of our journeys in life, becomes the ocean upon which

we sail to greatness.” See you at the Club! Chef Bob

Looking for a delightful way to meet a great group of women? Thursday mornings at MIYC bring much laughter as we play Pony Canasta, starting at 9:30 & ending after a delicious Club lunch by 1:00. New players welcome! All you need is a willingness to laugh & learn. Don't know how to play, but want to learn? Know how to play and want to join the group? Everyone is welcome! Call Marsha Riss 389-7477 or email [email protected]

Marco Island Yacht Club Friday Golf Group Marco Island Yacht Club has a lot of members who enjoy getting out on the links. In recognition of this, we have a golf club within the yacht club! Every Friday morning a MIYC men’s golf group gets together at one of the local courses to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and golf. This golfing opportunity has been going strong for many years, probably as long as MIYC has been a private, non-profit yacht club. In the winter and spring when we play at Hibiscus, the weekly participants swell to around 50 players on any given Friday. In the summer, when many in the group head north, some weeks we only have between 12 and 20 for play at The Glades. This weekly activity is open to all Members. For those of you who have no knowledge about our Friday golf, let me tell you that it is right for everyone of us who can still swing a golf club and bend down to pick up a golf ball! It is purely for the fun of being out

together and enjoying each other’s company on a beautiful 18 holes. Additionally, every 4 -6 weeks, we have a $5.00 tournament that usually has three flights. Everyone has a good chance to win. Enjoy a Beautiful Sunset Cruise Wednesday, May 31st! Equity, Full and Associate Members may participate, whether or not you have your own boat!

Jeff Comeaux Vice Commodore

We had a terrific Sunset Cruise April 25th—but with the sun setting later and later as Spring progresses, we’ve been missing the actual sunset in order to start dinner before 8pm! Well, we’re going to fix that little problem for the May 31st Sunset Cruise! Instead of boating first, we’ll have dinner first, and then go out on the water to watch the sun set! Problem solved! Watch for eblasts regarding starting times, but mark your calendar now for May 31st. This will be the first day back after the Club’s ten day closure to finish the roof, so I know we’ll all be eager to get back in action at the Club! Jeff Comeaux - MIYC Vice Commodore

Extended Cruises

Pete Frazier Power Fleet Captain

Join Us For the Extended Cruises Being Planned for the 2018-2019 Season!

All full Members are invited to join the fun and put new life and laughter into your time on the water! If you have not cruised an area before you will be able to learn from experienced cruisers and have a relaxing trip plus it is just more fun! Trip Captains organize the dinners and events and you can participate in part or all of the itinerary. Land Cruisers are invited to join us by car or ride on a boat to the destination where we arrange for hotel accommodations either at the marina or nearby. Some boaters with smaller boats also prefer to stay on shore. Signing up with the Extended Cruise team costs nothing and assures that you will be kept advised of plans as they are finalized. Plans are currently underway for a cruise up the West coast in May, a trip to the St. Charles Yacht Club in June, and a July 4th Legacy Harbor trip Captained by Ray Rosenberg. Please sign up to keep informed and let us know if you are interested in being a Cruise Captain: Questions or to Sign up: Pete and Peggy Frazier [email protected] 906 227 7625 Trips like this one epitomize what the MIYC is all about...great camaraderie, new friends, fabulous food, and the opportunity to share our love of boating....join the adventures! As we are working to plan our cruising schedule for next season we hope you will give us a click or call if there is a destination that you want to set sail for! We had such fun on our Staycation that it is being formally scheduled for December next year to allow everyone to experience an Extended Cruise close to home. We hope that the 50% of the Members who responded to the survey reporting that they have never participated in an Extended Cruise will join us for the Staycation. Also planned are trips to new places like Useppa and old favorites as well as cruises that combine Day and Extended Cruises. One request was that we plan a trip across Okeechobee and either to circumnavigate Florida or travel up the East Coast- let us know what floats your boat!. A Hunting Club at MIYC? Let us know if you are interested! Do you like to hunt? The success of the new Fishing Club has ignited some interest in starting a Hunting Club, too. Southwest Florida is teeming with waterfowl, upland birds, big game like wild boars and other potential game--not to mention, the possibility of organizing longer trips to more distant locations in the US and Canada. We could also organize Club skeet shoots at Gulf Coast Clays at Port of the Islands in Naples. If you are interested in joining with other Members to plan and go on hunts or go skeet shooting, please reply to this email to let us know. New Member Marshall Hughes has agreed to coordinate the Hunting Club. All those who reply will go on an email list, and Marshall will reach out to you to schedule a planning meeting and organize the group. The Hunting Club will become whatever you want to make it, bringing together Members who share this common interest. If you have questions, you can reach out to Marshall at [email protected]

Safety & Training

FORMAL ROUNDTABLE PROGRAMS - COMPLETE I’m pleased to report that our series of four formal Roundtable Programs have been successfully completed. Participating members, numbering 8-10 per session, were enlightened by subject matter experts in the areas of VHF/DSC Radio, Captain’s Responsibilities, ATON’S, Rules of the Road, and Charts. These fun and informative mid-day programs were conducted in the pleasant air of the Burgee Bar, followed by continued discussion over lunch. A special thanks to our subject matter experts, Jim Olmes and Laurie Harris! If you weren’t able to attend one of these programs, we hope you will join us for a new series of programs next season. Details will follow. 2018 VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS

Geoff Walker Safety & Training

The Marco Island Sailing and Power Squadron, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, offer certified vessel examiners to perform a free Vessel Safety Check at your boat (see insert below for contact information). There are no consequences if you don’t pass, and once any safety issues have been corrected, your examiner will schedule a return appointment to complete the check and issue your boat decal and certificate. Decals and certificates expire December 31 of each year, so repeat Safety Checks need to be performed annually. Once you have passed a safety inspection, or if you have previously passed a safety inspection, please contact me so I can count your vessel as completed. Geoff Walker (678) 296-5233, or at [email protected] .

Courtesy vessel inspections are provided by the Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Inspections cover US Coast Guard required safety equipment.

Decals awarded for successful inspections. SCHEDULE YOUR INSPECTION NOW Contact Rudy Landwaard of the Power Squadron (239) 389-4444

MIYC Membership

Each month we say, well, things will slow down , but not at MIYC and not for the Membership Committee! Many of you entertained guests on Easter Sunday at the Club. Thank you as we received many leads of possible new members from many Members. We appreciate that you are proud of your Club and want to have your friends join you all here! Thanks to all of you who attended the All Member Meeting on April 17th. We appreciated your questions at the meeting and around 80 of you stayed for happy hour and dinner and the entertainment! Thanks again to the McNallys for sponsoring the entertainment. It was so much fun! We have already told Chef that he has to teach us how to serve pasta like a “bird’s nest.” It is always good to have ideas for Chef for his cooking classes! Our Committee then helped to host the Chamber of Commerce After Five Event on April 18 th . Around 75 Chamber of Commerce members attended the event. Pam and Chef pulled out all the stops on this one! Chef’s appetizers were extremely well received and Pam had the Burgee Bar and courtyard beautifully decorated. Sonny Kenn entertained. With hope, we will add some new members from this event! We’re already following up on leads.

The best part of our column is welcoming our new Members! Gary and Susan Hieftje brought in by the Bretthauers and Andy and Heidi Woell who won the raffle at the Taste of Marco! Also Eric Condee and Linda Flores won Summer Memberships at the Chamber After Five Event. We welcomed Bruce Batzer and Diane Pogatchnik to the Club as new boat owners from Walker Marine. They will begin their three month trial membership on October 1, 2018, but already dined with us and made lots of purchases from the Ship’s Store! Finally, we would like to welcome the following Members to the Equity level !

Congratulations to: Maribel and Bob Aber Patti and Harvey Cohen Cherie and James Gerry Rita and David Krett

Remember that the Member Recruiting Member program is alive and well so keep recommending our Club to your friends! Sincerely, Kathy Caruso and Vicki Bretthauer Membership Co-Chairs

Messmer Cup Regatta Winners! The Signature Sailing Event of the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club is the Messmer Cup Regatta, now in its 54 th consecutive year. The 2018 race was held on Saturday, April 28 th off Keewaydin Island with 23 sailboats entered in 4 classes. Two sailboats from the Marco Island Yacht Club won first place in their classes highlighting the strength of competitive sailing at MIYC. Lois and Ed Dixon , perennial favorites in the multihull class with “Tripower”, once again staved off the strong competition from two boats to secure first place. New to racing in southwest Florida is “Dalliance” skippered by MIYC Member Bruce Harris and a highly skilled crew from Naples and Annapolis. “Dalliance” was able to squeak by the favorite “Dragon Fly” to take first place in the cruising class of 7 boats. This year’s Regatta was sponsored by Budweiser, the Gulf Coast Sailing Club, and the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. Congratulations to our MIYC winners!
